Scratch And Sniff Stickers Are Cooler Than Ever!

Scratch and sniff stickers some of the biggest icons in sticker history. If you grew up in the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s, you probably know the thrill of getting back a graded paper with one of these little scented circles to celebrate your hard work. They hold a special place in our heart here at Suzy's, and honestly, they're still one of our favorite sticker mediums ever!

Scratch and Sniff History

Scratch and sniff technology was invented by accident! While trying to make carbon-less copy paper, scientist Gale W. Matson created a technology called "microencapsulation." Essentially, this process is aromatic materials that get trapped in tiny plastic capsules. When you scratch the surface of the sticker, these capsules burst and release the aroma inside of them! It's easy to appreciate the experience of scratch and sniffs just for the fun of them, but learning the science and history behind them makes them even cooler!

By the late 70s and 80s, scratch and sniff stickers had exploded in popularity. Kids collected them like treasures! In the 70s, some of the first scratch and sniffs were marketed to teachers as rewards for their students. From perfume samplers in magazines to gas safety brochures, scratch and sniff technology was implemented in lots of useful ways.
